The Core Update
WebKit is proactively intercepting and disabling identity resolution scripts that utilize PII—like email addresses or phone numbers—to generate persistent tracking IDs. This update focuses on blocking third-party scripts that scrape form inputs or login fields to sync cross-site user identities. Official Source: Apple AnnouncementTechnical Impact & Mechanism
Modern tracking scripts have moved beyond client-side cookies, which browsers have already hardened. These identity providers now intercept user input events—specifically email or phone fields—during authentication or subscription flows. They exfiltrate this data to external servers, compute a hash or persistent token, and inject that token back into the browser's local storage or indexedDB to maintain a long-term footprint.WebKit is now flagging these network patterns as privacy violations. If your architecture relies on third-party identity resolution SDKs that operate out-of-band to 'enrich' user profiles, these requests will be systematically dropped or redirected to protect user PII.
Example of what WebKit is targeting:
CONSOLE // JAVASCRIPT
SYNTAX_CHECK: OK
// Typical trigger intercepted by new WebKit heuristics
document.querySelector('#email-input').addEventListener('blur', (e) => {
// Third-party scripts capturing PII to generate persistent identity graphs
fetch('https://third-party-tracker.com/resolve', {
method: 'POST',
body: JSON.stringify({ email: e.target.value })
});
});
Action Plan for Developers & Businesses
- Audit Vendor SDKs: Scan your checkout and auth flows for third-party scripts that process form data. If a provider claims to 'increase match rates' via hidden background calls, assume it will be blocked.
- Shift to First-Party Identity: Rely on secure, server-side session management. Use HttpOnly cookies and clear consent banners instead of relying on vendor-led identity resolution.
- Isolate Input Fields: Ensure PII fields in your UI are not exposed to third-party scripts via tag managers. Use sandboxed iframes for sensitive data entry to prevent exfiltration.
